Joe was born in Galway City and has lived there most of his life. It is through the media of painting that Joe expresses his artistic nature.
His preferred subject matters are Landscapes, Harbour Scenes, Galway City and Still Life and Figures.
Joe paints in Watercolour, Oils, Acrylic and Pastels.
Joe had his first Art Lessons when he attended night classes in the Galway Technical College in Fr. Griffin Rd, his teacher there was John Mulhern who was a founder member of the Galway Art Club and Joe still considers him to be his most influential mentor.
In the 70’s Joe took his A.T.C. exams in the Galway R.T.C. part time over 4 years, studying Life Drawing, Modeled Sculpture and Textile Design.
In the 90’s Joe attended water colour workshops with Judi Wagner (U.S.A.), Shelia Boylan Parsons (U.S.A.) and Margaret Huddy AWS NWS (U.S.A.). he also attended a pastel workshop with Victor Richardson and an oils and acrylic workshop with Trevor Geoghegan.
Joe also participated in Chanel 4’s program called “Watercolour Challenge” in 2000, winning the West of Ireland section of the program with his painting of Roundstone Harbour and competing in the Irish Final of Watercolour Challenge in Kylemore Abbey, Connemara. These water colours were later exhibited in The Mall Galleries in London in January 2001.
Joe exhibits with the Galway Art Club.
In his paintings Joe tries to capture a sense of time, place and atmosphere within a good composition. Examples of his work are held by people in Ireland, UK, France, Spain, USA, Australia.
